Granted I was testing audio and not MIDI, and the bandwidth requirements are much lower for MIDI, but I would still lean towards lengthening your MIDI cables instead. I’ve personally tried longer passive and/or active USB cables for recording, and found that they have more issues. Since it’s not just passing MIDI data, and is actively communicating with the computer all the time, the connection to the computer is arguably more important than the connection to the device. I strongly recommend you use shorter USB cables, and longer MIDI cables. No need for the overpriced and over-hyped nonsense, just not the super-cheap flimsy crap with very little shielding either. This is one of the very few situations where buying a decent quality digital cable can actually help a bit. I have had problems with 15m HDMI cables which would only handle low video resolutions before the image degraded hugely (random pixel noise). I've used USB cables around 10m long before without a booster and without problems, but I wouldn't want to go much longer than that. You'll end up with errors in the data which tends to lead to very strange behaviour (missing or wrong notes, random CC messages, etc) or delays because data needs to be re-sent multiple times when errors are detected. This degradation usually isn't as much of a problem with digital signals (and both USB and MIDI cables are digital) however when it does happens with digital cables then the signal tends to degrade quickly. Having said that, as with all cables the signal degrades the longer the cable is, and USB and MIDI are not high-strength signals designed to travel long distances.
The latency is introduced during the processing of the signals inside the computer, audio interface, etc. The electrical signals passing through that cable travels close to the speed of light, many orders of magnitude faster than the speed of sound, so you could probably add a few extra miles of cable and not be able to detect more latency with the human ear.
If you need to go very long (ie >10m) then getting a USB cable with a built-in booster might be a good idea.
